At least in the United States and Canada, the university system tends to lead to people having a lot of free time, communal televisions, and access to alcohol.The audience drinking game is an ancient and much-respected system for trope identification that evolved out of these factors. A literary trope is a common pattern, theme, motif in literature, or a figure of speech in which words are used in a sense different from their literal meaning. In the days before resources such as this catalogue, the drinking game was the most popular and accessible means of identifying tropes and cliches. It allows the viewers to bond in the shared experience of identifying these reoccurring themes and motifs, and then imbuing alcohol at rate determined by how frequent these tropes present themselves.It works like this: each regular occurrence in a show, film, etc is documented, and assigned a numeric score based on its prevalence, triteness, or perversity. During a viewing of the show, each time such a documented phenomenon occurs, players drink a number of sips of their preferred alcoholic beverage equal to the numeric score.
There are many television shows that are well-suited to these purposes and follow a predictable enough story arc that the audience has come to expect these tropes. The one that I'd like to attempt forming is for the Anime, Dragonball Z.
- Every time someone rapidly fires ki (1 sip)
- Every time someone mentions sayin (1 sip)
- Every time someone is punching, kicking rapidly hitting only air (1 sip) hitting each other (2 sips).
- Every time there is a large explosion (1 sip) and if the person following the large explosion is unscathed (2 sips)
- Kamehameha (2 sips)
- A power level is mentioned (4 sips)
- Vegeta calls Goku Kakarot (2 sips)
- Gohan laughs the annoying laugh (2 sips)
- Someone transforms super sayin (4 sips)
- Flashback (4 sips)
- A mountain is destroyed or someone gets knocked into a mountain (1 sip)
- Someone goes underwater (6 Sips)
- Someone dies (6 sips)
- Someone uses capsule Corp product (6 Sips)
